Planning your post-MBA path

Taking an MBA should be a tactical option within a pondered yet ambitious career strategy. In today’s world, there are all sorts of MBAs and all sorts of MBA students, and an MBA’s return on investment depends on the right student choosing the right MBA. Then, and as we repeatedly write in this blog, it’s all up to you and what you make of it in terms of learning, working, networking, and exploring your professional opportunities. This point is worth stressing: in and of itself, an MBA will not bring you fame and fortune, nor will it lead you down the yellow brick road towards your goals. That is why planning your post-MBA path is so crucial, and should actually begin before you decide to apply for your MBA. Here are our four top tips to help you elaborate a fruitful plan for your post-MBA path.
Be truthful to yourself and make the most of your application process
Given that an MBA is a major investment intended to boost your personal brand and career opportunities, the application process is in and of itself an opportunity to seriously reflect on your strengths and weaknesses; post-graduation goals; professional network; and so on. In this sense, the application process is already a part of your post-MBA planning, because it helps you revise past career decisions and establish clear goals.

If you’ve read our ebook, you know that applications must be thought through strategically to provide a well-rounded picture of who you are as an applicant. The most important thing is that you take charge of your application process yourself and engage in the kind of self-reflection it requires. Once admitted, save all your documents in a folder so you can update them and reinforce or rethink your ambitions.
Be flexible
One of the main advantages of an MBA is that it appeals to professionals from all sectors and industries; outside the classroom, you’ll also have the chance to meet entrepreneurs, market representatives and HR people from various backgrounds. So keep an open mind and learn as much as you can about the business realities you’ll be stepping into after your MBA.
Don’t be afraid of changing your mind or fine-tuning your goals because you met someone fascinating. What matters here is that you approach your future – whatever it may be – with humility and drive.
Keep a “Journal of Ambitions” and update it regularly
Your Application Folder will help you stay grounded and mindful of what made you apply for an MBA. The people you meet and the network you create during your MBA will help you understand the market and consider new career options or fine-tune your post-graduation goals in a pragmatic way. What we’re suggesting here is that you find a means – whatever works for you – of not losing track of any of your ambitions, wild as they may seem at times.

Update your “journal” monthly and write down the names of the people that may help you achieve each goal next to it. Don’t wait until the MBA is over to reach out to them, and start exploring your paths as soon as possible. Prepare your pitch and questions and listen attentively to what they tell you (remember that while you’re back in school, they are active in the market). Then, use that information when applying for jobs or seeking capital for your new venture.
Be present while planning your future
You’re only going to take one MBA in your life, so make sure that you enjoy it and aren’t consumed by the process of planning your post-graduation life!
