Alexandre Bastos Gomes, Alumnus of the Lisbon MBA Católica | Nova and Managing Partner at Portugal Jewels, wrote an article for Jornal Económico, sharing his opinion on the jewelry industry in Portugal and how sustainability can be a differentiating point.

According to Alexandre Bastos Gomes, sustainability is something intrinsic to the jewelry sector – a jewel is typically meant to last several generations and the metals used are completely recyclable. He mentions that “although there are no official numbers, several sources point out that more than 90% of the precious metals used in the jewelry production in Portugal come from recyclable pieces.”

Alexandre believes that the positioning of the Portuguese jewelry industry as an example of sustainability is perhaps the country’s greatest opportunity for differentiation. In Portugal the jewelry industry is small (around 450 companies), is organized in very well identified clusters, like Gondomar or Guimarães, and has a limited production scale, mostly handmade. These are good conditions for a quicker transformation when compared to other industries, such as textile, which is ten times bigger and more scattered.
