Azaf Zamir, Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv, in Lisbon
Asaf Zamir, the youngest Deputy Mayor of the Tel Aviv Chamber that helped transform the Israeli city into one of the most innovative cities in the world comes to Portugal for the ‘Tourism Innovation Competition – International Conference’, organized by The Lisbon MBA and by Turismo de Portugal, on the 18th of September, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
Asaf Zamir was a trainee lawyer with no political experience when, in 2008, co-founded the Rov Ha’Ir, party of the young faction of the city’s chamber. Since then he has been one of the major drivers of innovation in the city. He managed to renew the nightlife in downtown, set up youth support centers and housing, determined income subsidies for young people in exchange for voluntary work and has implemented a number of successful tourism campaigns.
Today, Tel Aviv is considered one of the most innovative cities in the world with the second most important entrepreneurial hub, right after Silicon Valley – according to PriceWaterhouseCoopers last year, the city’s sales and IPOs came to 15 billion dollars . In 2011, “Lonely Planet” considered the third best destination in the world (after New York and Berlin) and in 2013 the city was voted best gay destination in the world by American Airlines and the site GayCities.com.
The ‘Tourism Innovation Competition – International Conference’ will reveal the winners of the competition launched by The Lisbon MBA and by Turismo de Portugal, that challenged innovators around the world to create a solution to “measure” the behavior of tourists in the cities and countries they visit. The top three finalists will present their projects for collection and systematization of valuable information for the different stakeholders working in the tourism sector.
The conference will also be an opportunity to discuss the importance of innovation for management. It will feature a discussion panel on “Tourism 2.0: The digital’s role in tourism development and how the industry should adapt to it” that will be moderated by Pedro Oliveira, Academic Director of The Lisbon MBA. Already confirmed are Asaf Zamir, Tel Aviv’s Deputy Mayor, Marco Gouveia , SEO & Online Marketing Manager at Pestana Group, Nils Fonstad, Research Scientist at MIT CISR and Cesar Christoforidis, Vice President at Socialbakers for Latin America and Southern Europe.
The session will be opened by Daniel Traça, Dean of Nova School of Business and Economics and João Cotrim Figueiredo, President of Turismo de Portugal and will also count on the presence of Adolfo Mesquita Nunes, Secretary of State of Tourism, and Francisco Veloso, Dean of Católica-Lisbon School of Business and Economics.
