Paulo Raposo, Country Manager at Mastercard joined as our guest speaker for a ‘Breakfast with CEO’ session.

Paulo Raposo joined Mastercard in 2001 which, in his words, ‘was a crazy move and a jump in the dark because at the time no one knew Mastercard’. Paulo took us through the strategy he put in place focusing on adding value, rather than only on money transactions, to face the competition. Mastercard has innovated ever since and in the past years has become more technological, less dependent from transactions and capable of offering more products and services to clients and customers. As an example of this technological facet, Paulo considers that access to big data and the digitalization of services will allow a comparative analysis of what tourists do, allowing public and private entities to optimize development strategies for tourism accelerating the recovery of Portuguese tourism.

Paulo took us through what he thinks are the current challenges for Mastercard as well as how he views the competition with ‘big tech’ companies with technological financial services, such as Amazon or Apple.

Finally, Paulo advocated that the ‘future is cashless’ and the digitalization of payments will grow exponentially in the coming years.

We thank Paulo for sharing his strategic vision for Mastercard and its successful journey in becoming a major player.
