JN Barometer, a partnership between the Portuguese newspaper and The Lisbon MBA Alumni Community, reveals pessimism about the future of the economy

Jornal de Negócios July’s Barometer shows that former students of The Lisbon MBA are pessimistic about the evolution of the economy in the next few months. They expect labor market degradation, investment retraction and increased difficulties in accessing finance for SMEs.
Carlos Santos Lima, former The Lisbon MBA student, and branch manager at Credit Suisse, believes that results from this barometer show evidence of widespread pessimism. “I would say that they do not reflect the present, but instead the sentiment about the future, since the recent measures that were taken in terms of lay-offs and moratoriums on credits ‘anesthetized’ the present, postponing the bad news to the second quarter of 2021. When moratoriums end, companies’ cost cuts will start to be felt, resulting in the reduction in jobs and non-payment of credits, which will lead to the skyrocketing of bad loans in banks, with an abrupt drop in consumption and investment”, he comments.
The Lisbon MBA / Business Barometer is the result of a partnership between JN and The Lisbon MBA, and consists of a quarterly survey sent to our Alumni Community, inquiring on current economic and corporate trends.
Every edition is commented by an invited guest of our community. For this edition we had the privilege of having Carlos Santos Lima commenting the results.
