Mariana Coimbra, Managing Director at TDGI, S.A. – Teixeira Duarte Group and Board Member of The Lisbon MBA Alumni Club, wrote an insightful opinion article for Jornal Económico, under the topic “Buildings and the new challenges for society”.

Our alumna starts by stating that both the new ways of working and society’s plan for climate transition and decarbonization bring new challenges for buildings, which are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union, and thus require more sustainable design and construction solutions. Mariana underlines the huge gap between stakeholders participating in a building’s life cycle, stating that “only through a holistic and integrated approach involving all stakeholders and taking advantage of digital and technological development will we be able to maximize the value of buildings to society.”

Lastly, she introduces some insightful solutions, such as using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform huge databases of maintenance software into true knowledge and cross-referencing this information with real-time monitoring of the building’s behavior. According to Mariana, AI presents a huge potential to help society manage buildings more sustainably and efficiently, focusing on people’s well-being and maximizing the overall value creation.

Do you agree that Artificial Intelligence could be a solution for creating more sustainable buildings? What solutions would you propose to maximize the value of buildings to society?
