Entrepreneurship Chapter

The Lisbon MBA Alumni Club has recently presented to the community, in an online session, a plan for future activities developed by the Entrepreneurship Chapter, that will strengthen the collaboration between entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and investors, and promote knowledge sharing and networking opportunities. These new set of activities are being designed according to the insights taken from a survey that allowed to map the entrepreneurship community and its interests. The support for innovation is consistent with the Lisbon MBA culture and values and its commitment to an experiential, hands-on approach to education.

The findings from the Entrepreneurship Chapter survey showed that the Lisbon MBA alumni were significantly engaged in venture formation. 32% of respondents had started one or more for-profit ventures mostly in the Real Estate, Finance, Media, FMCG and Retail, Education, and Marketing and Advertising industries. Around 80% of those firms are based in Portugal, and the rest are distributed over the 5 continents. Nearly 57% of those who reported founding a company were “serial” entrepreneurs (i.e., had started more than one company). There is also 8% of alumni who are investors. Over 1500 jobs were created which reflects the impact these companies are having in the economy.

Entrepreneurship is potentially becoming a more appealing career choice due both to structural and perceptual changes in traditional employment and occupations, as well as to an apparent groundswell in young people’s interests in entrepreneurial endeavours. For instance, the proportion of the Lisbon MBA students selecting entrepreneurial projects for their Action Learning component of the MBA grew from 14% to 32% between last year and this year.

The Lisbon MBA is investing in various elements to form an ecosystem that contributes to making entrepreneurship happen and be successful. In doing so, we are partnering with Portuguese innovation consulting firm Beta-I to support the students who have opted for the Entrepreneurship Hub for their Action Learning project.

With a renewed team, the Entrepreneurship Chapter will certainly help the Lisbon MBA entrepreneurial community strengthen its own entrepreneurial ecosystems and, in turn, amplify their contribution to innovation-driven economic growth.
